Charleston Harbor is a busy port, and the entry from the ICW is close to the mouth, thus I felt that wonderful Southern Swell, about 4' with an 8 second period, in addition to the regular chop of an opposing wind and current. It was a great ride, but waves are hard to photograph, so I have given up trying! Besides, the day was cloudy with threatening storms thru the whole day which made the pictures all a bit dark, I am afraid.

I cut across the harbor and up the Wando River to Halsey Cannon Boat Yard. It is about 9 miles from the harbor and the main bridge across the Cooper River.

The Wando River is beautiful - particularly in the upper reaches when you cross under the Highway Bridge and leave the shipyard behind. It is deep, well marked and mostly undeveloped. Nonetheless, I was happy to see Halsey Cannon show up on the port side, as I was tired and the ride thru Charleston Harbor was exhilirating, but also tiring. The folks there are generous, Sean, who seems to run the place along with Margie are great. I was able to leave Doublewide in the water for a couple of days to get her straightened out and remove some of the things that I didn't want to leave thru the Summer (computer, GPS, other electronics and books). She was placed on blocks exactly as I directed - from the exact specifications in the PCI user's manual, so I am pretty sure she will be just fine. The only damage she might sustain would be if there is a lot of wind from a hurricane, but she is far enough up the Wando, that a storm surge is unlikely to reach her.

So Doublewide is 'parked' for a few months waiting out the hurricane season and giving me a break at home. I had wanted to make the whole journey in one trip, but I am going to skip Georgia and Eastern Florida and have the boat shipped to Apalachacola, if it is not too expensive. Dennis may be able to join me there and we can make that beautiful run from Apalachacola to Pensacola and maybe further.

If he can't join me, then I may just make the trip to Georgia and Florida anyway. But right now I am ready for a 'home fix'. I miss my family and my friends. Doublewide has been a wonderful companion and I hope we continue to have many good times together! She is truly the right choice for us!

I thank my husband for this wonderful once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to recapture a little of my adventurous spirit and for the freedom to do it alone. Not many husbands would have the confidence in their wife's abilities to even suggest it.

So please join me back here in March of 2005 for the continuation of my adventure.
